Translated from the Italian with a preface by the Very Rev. Dr Faber. Folding map frontispiece, xvi + 653pp, 12 pages of publisher's advertisments at rear, original red decorative cloth gilt, all edges gilt, cloth flecked and worn with a little minor loss at extremities, 3 leaves stained and insect damaged in one place along gutter, 19th century inscription front paste down, map evenly browned, some foxing throughout. Thick octavo. First Edition As well as being an important Jesuit text, this book is also an important early travel work covering Xavier's work in Mozambique, Goa, Ceylon, Indonesia, and most importantly Japan. A very tidy copy bound in recent quarter dark brown calf with marbled paper boards. Minimal wear. Raised bands to spine with gilt spine titles on a green morocco spine label. Gilt date to foot of spine. Portrait frontispiece, (22), 768 pages plus folding map. Collated complete. A translation of: La vie de Saint Franc ois Xavier de la Compagnie de Jesus, apostre des Indes et du Japon. The frontispiece portrait of St. Francis Xavier is signed: MBurghers sculp. Short closed tear to Mm7 with no loss of text. A few leaves a little cropped on the fore margin well away from the text. Folding map of the Atlantic to the Pacific in good order with some minor toning. Some very slight marginal intermittent waterstaining.
